Look Back at April

Well even though the weather wasn’t always on our side, April turned out to be an extremely busy and successful month for ARNY. April saw us hold the first Wednesday Wobble of the season and the first Sunday social ride and we also had the ARNY Open Day in the middle of the month.

The Open Day was held on Saturday 22nd April and 11 ARNY Tutors turned out to support the event. Andy Creasey from the North Yorks Fire and Rescue Service turned up along with Lee Davies the RoSPA Regional Coordinator. The morning started with some very inclement weather but despite this we ended up doing several taster rides and we ended up with 6 new members as a result of the event. It was particularly pleasing for all involved that everybody who took the opportunity to go on a taster ride subsequently joined up to the group. It was also great to see some ARNY members turn up to support the event. We now have over 100 active members; Associates, Post Test Members and Tutors. Thanks also go to the Strawberry Fields Café who were excellent hosts for the Open Day and managed to keep everyone going with warm drinks and sandwiches of choice.

Simon Wilson was our host for the first Wednesday Wobble of the summer riding season which saw the group winding their way from York ending up with fish and chips for many in Helmsley. It was a beautiful evening with blue skies and bright sunshine, which was a little low towards the end, but all agreed that it was a fantastic start to the social calendar. Paul Batty recorded the ride and has posted an excellent video on the Facebook page for all to see. As it is such a great record of a typical ARNY social ride, the video has also been posted on the website.

Simon was also the host for the first Sunday social ride towards the end of the month. The route took us through some great roads with a descent of Chimney Bank for a coffee stop in Rosedale. The second part of the ride ended at Raithwaite Sandsend where an excellent lunch was taken on the patio looking over the spectacular gardens.

One member took on a very impressive “Afternoon Tea” for which he was looking for volunteers to help him finish it off towards the end! The weather was much better than expected and most made it home just before the showers began.

The social calendar for the whole year is available via a link on the website, or via the link that has been circulated. Further detail will be added to the calendar as we go through the season, including venues and hosts as and when they are decided. The events will also be communicated on Facebook and WhatsApp as always so keep an eye out for what’s happening and planned. There will be a Wednesday Wobble hosted by Phil Aspinall and a Sunday Social hosted by John Neaves in May. Training will continue on Saturday mornings as always with the exception of Saturday May 20th which coincides with the Tutor Training weekend.

The riding season has started off really well and we are all looking forward to some better weather over the Bank Holiday weekends in May to continue the ride.

Until next time….
