Look Back at May

May was our first full month back to training and as a result it was a bit frustrating that it was an extremely wet month, with rainfall close to double the average for the month of May!

One training weekend was lost due to the extreme rainfall with standing water causing activities to be curtailed. This resulted in 7 Tutors and 3 hardy Associates huddled under the red awnings at Strawberry Fields drinking coffee and putting the world to rights – not a bad pastime for a wet Saturday morning!

Despite the challenges of the weather there was an impressive amount of activity throughout the month. There were nearly 30 training sessions and we welcomed one new member in May. There were test passes for Associates and renewals for Tutors as things really start to ramp up. We are all pleased to be back at Strawberry Fields which is proving to be an increasingly popular stop for bikers resulting in some impressively busy Saturday mornings.

May saw the ARNY social calendar kick into action in earnest. There was a Wednesday wobble which involved a trip to the East Coast with John Neaves continuing to impress with his knowledge of the roads, and outstanding routes, from Strawberry Fields out to Scarborough. The ride ended with the customary fish and chips and was thoroughly enjoyed by all that could make it along.

ARNY Advanced Tutor Andy Esmond, seen here and above, then kept us all up to date with his exploits at the Hallas Rally Raid in Greece. This is a 7 day event riding in the remote mountains, forests and valleys in central Greece. Andy managed to compete on each of the 7 days and, according to the official results, Andy spent 58 hours and 38 minutes competing over the 7 days! Looking at some of the pictures Andy posted on Facebook, not all of those hours were spent in the saddle, but Well Done to Andy for what looked like a mammoth undertaking and, thanks for all the pictures!

Toward the end of the month, the improving weather came along in time for an ARNY Social ride, hosted by Simon Wilson, ending at Castle Hills. It was an excellent day with blue skies, for most of the day, with some great riding and scenery. The ride ended on Castle Hill, with fantastic views of the surrounding area and a personal delivery, arranged by Simon, of the local favourite Dixon’s ice cream for all to enjoy. Keep an eye out for future social rides, the pressure is now on to match such a great event.

With the weather looking good for June, we are expecting another busy and active month for us all. Until next time….
