Look back at August

The weather was reasonably kind to us for riding in August as we got back up and running with a full month of training and a return to a little social activity.

Now fully back at the usual meeting point of Strawberry Fields Café it was another extremely busy month. There was a total of 32 training sessions involving 12 Associates with some very well attended Saturday mornings. The good weather and the outside facilities at Strawberry Fields have helped us all to manage the higher numbers whilst retaining appropriate measures.

We are monitoring our usual training end venues and to adjust as appropriate. During the month one of our usual end venues Thirsk Garden Centre doubled up as the venue for a birthday celebration, balloons and all, for Martin Dougherty who reached a “significant landmark”. A socially distanced birthday cake was enjoyed by all, including Martin’s family.

The group continues to attract a lot of interest with another three new members joining in August and we welcome Andy, Baz and Wayne to the group.

Alongside a busy training month there was also a lot of test activity. Vadim, Geoff and

David all had test passes and Jeff, who has been a Tutor for the group and current Tutor and Group Secretary Richard also passed their tri-annual re-tests. Many congratulations to them all on what are great, and well deserved, achievements.

The end of the month saw many of the Tutors taking advantage of some training organised by our Training Officer Ian Speight. Tutors often get asked about slow riding skills by Associates and as a result Ian decided to get some training for the Tutors with respect to how slow riding is taught to new riders with some help from Anchor Motorbike Training in Dewsbury.

The training involved the Tutors going through some of the exercises in the Mod 1 test element using Anchor’s training bikes along with some discussion about typical learner challenges and ideas as to how to help riders with slow riding skill development. The training was very well received by all and, not mentioning any names, some Tutors and Training Officers found the opportunity to drop the training bikes a little bit too tempting!

The group put a “toe in the water” (almost literally) with a Wednesday Wobble social ride from Strawberry Fields to Whitby in the middle of the month. The somewhat inclement weather did not deter all and the Fish and Chips in Whitby made the soggy ride even more worthwhile.

Although another layer may now be needed there are still a couple of months to go on the Summer Training Calendar and the weather forecast for September looks pretty reasonable at the moment so we are all looking forward to continuing with the high levels of training and riding before things get a bit more chilly!

Until next time…
